Introduction

The island of Kefalonia sits between Lefkada and Zakynthos Islands in the Ionian Sea.

You can reach Kefalonia by taking the car ferry from Vasiliki, Lefkada Island to the town of Fiskardo, Kefalonia, on the island's northern tip. The island also connects to the ports of Patras and Kyllini on the Greek mainland.

Myrtos Beach

Around the northern tip of Kefalonia you'll find the beautiful Mytros Beach with its brilliant light blue waters below the cliffs. You can also walk under the Myrtos Cave on the shoreline, and take in amazing views of the beach and coastline from high above at the Myrtos Beach Viewpoint pull-offs on the northern and southern side of the beach.

Assos, Greece

You might also visit the lovely nearby village of Assos, which features small beaches and the possibility of taking in views over the village, by hiking up the peninsula hill that connects to the town. Atop the hill you'll find the ruins of the Venetian Castle you can explore. From the top of the peninsula you're rewarded with excellent views over the coasts.

The hike to reach the entrance of the Venetian Castle is approximately 0.8 miles (1.3 km) one way from Assos.

Petani Beach

On the western side of the Kefalonia you'll find another popular scenic beach with clear vibrant blue waters, Petani Beach. This stunning beach sits below giant cliffs which stretch out into the ocean making for exceptional scenery.

Sami, Greece

Near the island's central port town of Sami you'll find an incredible and unique attraction, the Melissani Lake Cave. This stunning cave is open from above and contains magnificent deep blue waters that you can enjoy with a short boat ride tour.

Nearby the cave you might visit the beautiful Antisamos Beach with its clear waters and views  out to Ithaca Island.

Mount Ainos

One of the highest peaks of all the Ionian Islands is Mount Ainos, which offers breathtaking panoramic views from the top.

The trailhead for Mount Ainos begins at a radio broadcasting station at the end of the road near the top, where you can walk along a 4.1 mile (6.6 km) round-trip loop trail featuring various viewpoints overlooking the island and coast. You'll also be walking through peaceful forests along this hike.
