The Salzkammergut region is arguably one of the most beautiful areas of the world, with several serene lakeside villages set amongst tall gorgeous lush mountains, with the most famous village being Hallstatt.
The most popular lakeside villages of Salzkammergut is Hallstatt, which is located below tall mountains on the Hallstattersee Lake. The enormous mountain behind Hallstatt is known as Dachstein, and together with Hallstatt is actually part of a UNESCO world heritage region. Be sure to walk around the village to enjoy its beauty, especially the charming Marktplatz square.
In Hallstatt be sure to enjoy the views just above the village from the WonderfulView viewpoint, and just north of town be sure to enjoy the picturesque views of Hallstatt from the Classic Village Viewpoint.
From the town you can reach several great attractions, including the Salt Mine Hallstatt from which the region's wealth arose, and the nearby Skywalk Hallstatt with excellent views overlooking the town and the Hallstatter See lake you don't want to miss.
For even more impressive views, you can take the ferry across the Hallstattersee Lake (or drive)to the village of Obertraun and walk to the Dachstein Krippenstein chair lift. This lift will take you high up to to the 5 Fingers Vista Point atop a lower peak of Krippenstein Mountain. The views from the top are divine and absolutely breathtaking, and nearby you can admire different views from the Welterbespirale observation platform, which is just a short walk away.
It's also possible to take the lift higher up the mountain, or spend some time hiking and exploring along the various trails of Krippenstein Mountain. If you're interested in getting even higher up near the peak however, you'll need to drive quite far around the mountain to the village of Schildlehen, where you can take the lift up to the Dachstein Skywalk.
The spa town of Bad Ischl is one of the largest towns in the region which you'll likely stop in on your way to Hallstatt. If you have some time here you should walk around the Kongress & Theaterhaus to admire this elegant structure from outside, and also visit the Kaiservilla, a quaint but lavish royal summer villa.
One of the region's other most scenic towns is St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, which sits below Schafberg Mountain on the vibrant Wolfgangsee lake. This is another town you must walk around to admire, which features stunning traditional Austrian architecture.
You can also take a cog train from town up to the top of Schafberg Mountain to enjoy majestic views over the lakes and villages below. The station for this train is the Schafberg Cog Railway, which is located next to one the town's Schafberg ferry dock and a bus station.
Other gorgeous towns with captivating architecture and stunning scenery you might consider exploring are Mondsee and St. Gilgen, both of which located along the route between Salzburg and Hallstatt.
St. Gilgen is located along the western edge of Wolfgangsee, while the town of Mondsee is located just to the north along the Mondsee Lake.
Another great attraction is Schloss Ort, a highly photogenic Renaissance-era castle built on a tiny island in a lake in the town of Gmunden. From this castle you can enjoy amazing panoramic views of the area in a blissful setting.
One more attraction to consider is the Stift Admont Library, an incredibly elegant and intricate library with an extravagant interior. The library is definitely worthvisiting, but it is located quite far from any of the other recommended attractions, about 1.5hours east of Hallstatt.
