Salzburg & Werfen, austria
Attractions Guide

Introduction

Salzburg is an incredibly beautiful city located in the Austrian Alps which is both the birthplace of Mozart and also the setting for The Sound of Music film. Most of the Salzburg's main attractions can be found in a small area along both sides of the Salzach River, within the historic city center.

Top Sights in Salzburg

Among Salzburg's top attractions is the Mirabell Palace and its gorgeous manicured gardens, which feature views of the hilltop Hohensalzburg Fortress across the river.

Just across the river from the Mirabell Palace is the stately Residenzplatz plaza, which is surrounded by lovely baroque structures including the Salzburg Cathedral and the lavish Salzburg Residenz palace. This stunning 17th century palace hosts extravagant ornate interiors and priceless fine art, which you can see with a tour.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Nearby the Residenzplatz you can walk the steep path or take the funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, a massive medieval castle which hosts a large variety of interesting exhibits and treasures within an extremely well-preserved 11th century fortress. While exploring Hohensalzburg you can also enjoy amazing views over the city.

In the hills above the Residenzplatz you can enjoy excellent views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the city from atop medieval walls, at both Richterhoehe Mönchsberg and Bürgerwehr Mönchsberg. Across the river from the fortress is the Monastery Kapuzinerkloster, which hosts fantastic views over the Fortress framed behind Salzburg.

Mozart Museums

Also notable in town are two museums located in former homes of Mozart, but be aware that despite their importance, they are not very highly rated. These include Mozart's Birthplace where the famous composer was born, and the Mozart Wohnhaus Museum where Mozart once lived.

Schloss Hellbrunn Palace

Just on the outskirts of town is the popular Schloss Hellbrunn, a lavish baroque villa with beautiful gardens, a large park, and even a zoo.

Werfen, Austria

Just a short 40 minute drive or train ride from Salzburg is the town of Werfen, where you'll find two great attractions. Located just above the city is Hohenwerfen Castle, a stunning medieval rock castle that's extremely well-preserved and surrounded by fortified walls and towers.

The city's other major attraction is the Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world. This attractions is extremely popular but also quite time-consuming to visit. From the center of Werfern you can take the bus or drive up to the Parking Furgoperfecto Eisriesenwelt on the mountain. From the lot it's a 20 minute walk to the chairlift, and another 20 minute walk to reach the cave, which is only accessible via an exciting 70 minute tour.
