The following attractions are listed in order along a recommended route through the scenic Wachau Valley from Vienna. The Wachau Valley is located along the Danube River east of Vienna, with green hills and mountains on either side, where you'll find many stunning medieval castles and abbeys along with lovely villages and towns.
Before heading west, you might consider stopping at the fairytale-like Kreuzenstein Castle located along the route in the town of Leobendorf. This castle is only open for tours in the summer, however the castle is still very impressive when seen from outside. The castle displays striking gothic architecture throughout its design. Inside the castle is an armory, as well as elaborate medieval rooms.
Kreuzenstein Castle is about 30-40 minutes from Central Vienna by car. In order to reach the castle via public transportation, you'll need to take a 40 minute train ride to the Leobendorf Bahnhof Train Station and walk about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) each way to reach the castle.
Afterwards you can continue to the, small but charming medieval castle of Grafenegger Advent (or Grafenegg Castle), with its stunningly beautiful architecture.
Next you can cross the Danube River to visit the impressive Benediktinerstift Göttweig Abbey, a large Benedictine monastery complex atop a hill.
Now cross back over the river towards the village of Dürnstein, where you'll find a small beautiful riverfront monastery (Stift Dürnstein) as well as the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle you can explore, Burgruine Dürnstein, which offers outstanding views overlooking the river and village below.
Continuing along the Danube you'll need to cross the river once more. The next destination is the ruins of another medieval hilltop castle, Burgruine Aggstein. From this castle you take in breathtaking views over the valley and river. The castle is quite charming and picturesque.
Continue now to the Stift Melk Abbey, a large white and yellow baroque complex with a magnificent library and church within its ornate lavish interiors.
Nearby is one more castle you might consider visiting, the quaint Schallaburg Castle. Unfortunately the revolving exhibitions on display within the castle are not related to the castle, however it is enjoyable to explore the grounds and admire the design of the structure.
